08 February 2006
Nonthaburi , Thailand . Thaicom Plc.
(SATTEL) announced today that it has been
named the '2006 Industry Innovator for
Technology Development and Application,' (07
February Local Time) in the private sector
for its IPSTAR technology by the Society of
Satellite Professionals International (SSPI)
on the opening night of the Satellite 2006
Exhibition and Conference in Washington
D.C., U.S.A. The Industry Innovators Award
program was initiated by the SSPI in 1993 to
highlight outstanding new contributions to
the field of satellite communications by
both private and public-sector
organizations.
According to SSPI, Thaicom and Space
Systems/Loral were recognized for developing
and applying technology that sharply reduces
space segment cost 5-10 times for broadband
Internet via satellite. As the heaviest
commercial satellite ever launched, and
built by Space Systems/Loral, IPSTAR can
support up to four million broadband
subscribers and make possible a commercially
viable service at reasonable prices. In
addition, IPSTAR's innovative design
involves high-performance spot beams with an
aggressive multi-band frequency reuse plan,
and an innovative air interface, including
the first commercial deployment of Adaptive
Coding and Modulation on the outbound and
inbound links.
Thaicom executive chairman, Dr.
Dumrong Kasemset stated in his speech that,
'We are greatly honored to receive this
auspicious Award from the Society of
Satellite Professionals International.
Without the efforts of many people on the
IPSTAR project, we would not have been able
to achieve this level of success. Therefore
I would like to take this opportunity to
give special thanks to our technology
partner Codespace , who designed and
implemented the IPSTAR system with us; Space
System/Loral , who implemented the
ground-breaking satellite design;
Arianespace , who took the challenge of
launching the world's biggest commercial
payload at 6.5 tons; Nera of Norway , who
developed the gateway technology; and
Efficient Channel Coding , who developed the
user terminals.
'Thaicom started the IPSTAR project
in 1997. The key concept was to deploy
massive frequency re-use similar to that
used in mobile cellular networks, combined
with advanced coding technology. IPSTAR was
initiated to help the community at large,
especially where there is lack of land lines
and telecom infrastructure able support
broadband technology. We foresee IPSTAR
becoming a global solution for low-cost
broadband satellite services. '
